Sorry for the long awaited pageant post! My schedule has been hectic since the pageant ended and in a few more posts, you’ll see where I have been doing. But first, allow me to take you through my amazing pageant experience in Toronto!

After a long week, the Miss Teen Canada – World Pageant Search is over.

Congratulations to Siera Bearchell, Miss Teen Saskatchewan, for winning the National pageant! She definitely deserves the title Miss Teen Canada – World 2009 and will represent Canada very well at the Miss Teen World pageant in Houston!

As soon as we arrived on Sunday, 54 girls were given our sashes and numbers and sent for our hair and makeup to be done for the photo shoot and video shoot. We got assigned to our rooms and I shared a room with two awesome girls – Katherine Highgate from Ontario and Karmen Guillas from Manitoba. It was a busy day and we ended it with a dinner with the parents and MTC-W staff.

Monday was the busiest day of the week. Many of us woke up at 4:00 a.m. to get ready for the exciting day which started with an appearance at Breakfast Television. We went on the Hippo Tours – the Hippo bus drove into Lake Ontario! - and had lunch at a Greek restaurant. After a fulfilling lunch, we received a make up lesson from PRO Makeup School. We were given a special MTC-W color lip gloss! The day goes on with an appearance on MTV Live followed by a motivation speech from Christopher Headley – director of Toronto Academy of Acting.

We started rehearsal on Tuesday for the opening number with our choreographer, Omar. Then we made our third media appearance which was Much on Demand where we were in the audience. Kate Stark, Miss Teen Canada – World 2008 and Andrea, first runner up of Miss Teen Canada – World 2009 were both interviewed while Aslyan got to have a pillow fight with Tim Deegan. After dinner, Elmer Olsen and his crew talked to us about the reality of the modeling industry.

We were so excited to visit the CN Tower Wednesday morning. I almost got interviewed by a Chinese Newspaper but unfortunately the time was tight and we had to go back to the hotel for more rehearsal. Dinner was one of the most interesting and great experiences. We went to Medieval Times – a place where live performances of jousting entertained us while we ate with our hands. Yes, 54 gorgeous pageant girls ate with their hands that night. It was such a fun night and everyone enjoyed the dinner.

Tension and stress deepened as Thursday came since the Preliminary round was that night. But before that, we had the privilege of attending a somewhat private party held by FAZE Magazine. Many singers were there to perform such as, Shiloh, Jessica Tyler, and the Cunningham Sisters, and a guest appearance from Geordie King. As the publisher of the magazine, also one of the judges, Lorraine, introduced each of us, she chose a representative from each province to do a question and answer on the stage. I was chosen to represent Alberta. Three provinces were to answer questions and the audience voted for who had the best answer. My answer got the second loudest cheer so unfortunately, my staging time at the FAZE party ended there. But the fun doesn’t stop. I had tons of pictures of me taken by the Chinese newspaper that didn’t get a chance to interview me at the CN Tower.

Thursday night: Preliminaries
The make up artists started to arrive as we were rehearsing. The problem was our hairstylists didn’t show up. Girls frantically troubled over how to do their hair for the preliminary competition. I struggled with my hair but in the end, it didn’t look too bad – just a bit flat. At the Betty Oliphant Theatre, every girl got a chance to show their beautiful evening gowns and swim wear on the stage for the judges and audience. This was an important night as the scores determined gave an idea who will be going into the Top 20 on Saturday night. I felt that I did really good and confident in both my walks. I had tons of fun and it felt great to be back on stage again!

Friday morning: Interview
I reviewed liked crazy for my interview to find out that the interview experience was totally not what I had expected. The interview this time was really conversational. Funny thing is, I stood through my whole interview because the judges forgot to tell me to sit down! But it was great to have a conversation with the judges, didn’t make me feel nervous at all. (I was so ready to answer those hard pageant questions though! Ha-ha)

Friday night: Talent
I must say that the delegates of the MTC-W pageant have AMAZING talents! Every singer’s voice was so beautiful, every dancer’s movements were mesmerizing and all the other talents were very original. I did my Chinese Ribbon dance and I got such great feedback. It was really fun to show a bit of my culture.

After the Talent, we went back to the hotel, had dinner and did our Ms. Congeniality voting and gift exchange. We then received our gift bags from MTC-W and the sponsors. I think I now possess a pin from all the provinces from the west to the east and have hair products that I will never use because they are for brunettes and blondes. Ha-ha! It was a great way to end off the night.

Saturday: Final Show
Everyone was exhausted in the morning but ready for the amazing day ahead! We arrived at the John Bassett Theatre and as Chris and Adam went to look for our dressing rooms, we all sprawled out on the floor for a quick nap. It was a pretty funny sight. Our dressing rooms were really nice – we got space to move around and mirrors with great lighting. We started rehearsal on the stage after lunch. At first it was pretty hectic, but it worked out after a few extra runs. As the clock ticked, some girls were getting more nervous. I was starting to get a bit nervous but as we were waiting backstage to go on for our opening number, my nervousness turned into excitement. The whole night I was excited and having so much fun! I was really happy that I won both the People’s Choice Award and the FTC Fundraising Award. Having raised, $10,000, I was honored to present the check of $49,701 raised by all the delegates to Marc Kielburger, Co-Founder of Free the Children.

When the time came to announce the Top 10, I admit, I was a bit nervous. Then when it came time to announce the Top 5, I was a bit disappointed that I didn’t make it, but I am happy that I placed in the Top 10. It is another huge accomplishment for me and the experiences that I had throughout the week has allowed me to grow. I will always remember the amazing memories and hope to stay in touch with the girls from the pageant.

Overall, I LOVED this pageant experience. It was so much fun, so enjoyable and I learned so much! This pageant has allowed me to learn more about myself, go on TV shows, gain important skills and meet tons of people - not only did I get to meet 53 other AMAZING girls, I also had the opportunity to meet Degrassi: The Next Generation actors - Jessica Tyler who performed at the FAZE Magazine party, and Paula Brancati and Adamo Ruggiero who were both our pageant hosts - also, the pageant judges - Christopher Healy of the Toronto Academy of Acting, Lorraine Zander: publisher of FAZE Magazine, Louise Pitre, Clarence Ford, Melani Chong, Maureen Fenn, Julian Brass of NotableTV.com, even Elmer Olsen! Also, our pageant blog assignment giver, Smojoe as a judge! (I do miss our blog assignments a bit haha) I loved our chaperons - Adam and Chris! My hair dressers and make-up artists were awesome. These were such wondeful people and the memories I have created with each and one of them will be stuck with me forever =)

I am not sure if I will continue to compete in pageants in the near future. After the week, I was exhausted, as it was so much work and didn’t want to. But now, I feel that I might go into it again because it was a lot of fun and the experiences you get are worth it. I am thinking of reentering the MTC-W pageant 2010 but I don’t know if it’s possible. I am also thinking of entering Miss Globe Canada. I’ll have to see, I will just concentrate on my first year of university right now.

First, I would like to thank my family for supporting me in this pageant. Without my mom, I would not have had the courage to compete. Without my dad, I would not have won the People’s Choice Award. Without either of them or my sister and brother, I would not have made it this far. They helped me so much in this pageant. They were my inspiration, my motivation and I am so grateful that I have such wonderful people supporting me in my life.

I would like to thank my friends for supporting me as well. Many words of encouragement kept me going. Some friends allowed me to borrow clothes or other things for the pageant and many helped me with the voting and fundraising as well.

Make a Difference with Free the Children (MTC-W Blog Assignment #3)

"Free the Children is a shining example of how young people can change the world." -Jane Goodall

Marketing for Free the Children:

This photo caught my eye because there were so many people in the photo. With a closure look, all these kids are all smiling and jumping for joy. As a Marketing Director, I would choose to use this photo because it shows the happiness in these children’s lives when they are receiving an education.

That is what Free the Children can bring kids – joy, happiness and hope. By providing them with education, clean water, health care, sanitation and a new way of life, people in poverty are given what everyone deserves regardless of race or sex.

Not everyone is living in glamour or a comfortable life. A lot of people have heard of the situations in developing countries but they don’t take any action. Some people believe they don’t have the ability to help out or teenagers might think they can’t make a difference. But Free the Children help young people engage in these social issues and allow them to make a real contribution to the world. This picture can inform individuals and show them how they are creating change. People will see that if they contribute to Free the Children by donating or personally helping out with the programs in the countries, they can make a huge difference in children’s lives.

My platform and fundraising for Free the Children:

Free the Children is the charity that inspired my platform in the Miss Teen Alberta pageant. I was trying to find out what I really cared about, what I wanted to promote and had seen a commercial for Free the Children on TV about their program Build a School. This commercial inspired me – showed me children smiling. You could see the hope in their eyes as they were learning. With the help of Free the Children, their lives have changed for the better. Therefore, I decided that I really wanted to promote providing education in developing countries because I believe everyone deserves a chance to be educated. As citizens of developed countries, we can help these people; provide them with textbooks, money and teachers. With the power of education, I believe it can help end world poverty.

I am happy that I was able to raise $10,000 for Free the Children. This photo proves to me that with my help in raising money for the charity, the children are not only receiving an education, they are also enjoying life. The Free the Children Primary School has allowed the children to receive an education that they deserve. This education can provide them with so many more opportunities in life. I believe I have made such a huge difference in many of the children’s life and I would not have been able to raise that much money in six weeks without being Miss Teen Alberta. Being a titleholder has allowed me to influence others on a positive level and raise awareness on the causes that I support. If I become Miss Teen Canada, I will be able to do on a greater level.

Toronto!

I left Calgary at 12:40 a.m. this morning and arrived in Toronto around 6:30 a.m. I am really tired right now but I'm so excited - I just want to blog about my arrival.

I am staying at my Aunt's place right now and I will be heading to the Novotel tomorrow morning. I am really looking forward to meeting everyone - all the girls and staff! All the exciting events that are going to happen during the week will create so many memories and experiences for me!

It feels great to be in Toronto! The weather is awesome! It's a great chance for me to get used to Toronto too because I am moving here in September for University. So this trip, my mom and my sister are going to be looking for an apartment while I am doing the pageant. My sister is coming here for her Masters degree so we will be staying together.

Visiting the Town of Tecumseh and its surrounding areas

Tecumseh

Tecumseh is a well rounded friendly community which is great for residents and visitors. With a population of 24 000, it is easily accessible with its direct access to the NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) superhighway, and the Highway 401. Tecumseh offers great recreational activities, boutique shopping, and a variety of dinning. Although it is a small town, it offers big city amenities, which is yours to discover.

Brief History

Tecumseh was first known as Rygate in 1792 up until it was renamed Tecumseh in 1912. The name Tecumseh comes from the leader of the Shawnee Tribe who was killed in the War of 1812.

Tecumseh was an important railway depot in the 1840’s that held many popular hotels such as The Bedell Hotel and the Soullier Inn. The original settlers of Tecumseh were the French, and it wasn’t until the town of Windsor’s population grew that residents began to settle in the surrounding areas, including Tecumseh, bringing a variety of immigrants.

Tecumseh truly flourished in 1931 when Green Giant Factory as Fine Foods of Canada was established. Green Giant still resigns in Tecumseh today, but is now known as Bonduelle.

Tecumseh is located in Southwestern Ontario on Lake St. Claire. The nearest major city is Windsor, being within a 10 min drive.

The Windsor Riverfront Park/ Odette Sculpture Park

Their riverfront park is a pleasant place to be, especially if the large freighters are nearby, and the view of the Detroit skyline is outstanding.

I enjoyed this book so much that I had to do a review on it =)

During my road trip, I finished reading Remember Me? by Sophie Kinsella. It was difficult for me to put it down. Through series of my mom telling me to stop reading on the car, to picking up the book whenever we stop at a traffic light, to starting to read after I finished my meal...I finally finished the amazing book!

I have always loved reading Sophie Kinsella's books. It is because they are very easy to relate to and easy create a picture in your mind. The Shopaholic series were definitely hard to put down books as well.

Remember Me? is about Lexi Smart, a 28 year old who has lost three years of her memory after a car accident and waking up in a hospital. Having her mind set in 3 years ago, she finds herself looking very different - her hair is gorgeous, her teeth are perfect and her body is toned. Another shock was that she was married to a drop-dead gorgeous husband! She leaves the hospital into a world of riches - a multimillionaire husband, LV handbag, Mercedes, "loft-style living" - a life she never thought of ever having. It was like a dream come true!

As she desperately tries to find out about the missing three years, she opens up secrets and lies in her new life. She had went from a fun, alive person to being a "b*tch-from-hell boss". The friends she used to always be with have ditched her, she is constantly cheating on her apparently carb-free diet and her husband's amazing architect tells her a huge secret about her life.

What I love about reading this book is that it makes me laugh and think. Since I'm going into business, it also teaches me what I shouldn't do (whether the facts in the book are true or not) while I'm climbing up the corporate ladder. It gives a message that everyone should be themselves or they won't truly be happy. No matter how hard they try to become someone else or try to accept the ways that totally don't fit their personality, they will inevitably realize that they want their old self back.

If you're up for a fun, exciting and entertaining book, Remember Me? is definitely a great book to take a look at! Same with the Shopaholic series!

Revised from 'Long and distant...'

Sorry for the long awaited posts! I have been really busy with studying for my diploma exams!

June 26th was my last day of high school which I ended with a Social Studies diploma exam. That night, I had my first and last dance recital with Elite Dance Academy. I am very happy that it went really well for me as I gave it my best and enjoyed my time! Thought, I’m sad that it’s over. But with the end of something, it is the start of something new; I’m looking forward to attending a good dance studio in Toronto.

Now that high school is over, it’s weird. I don’t feel that I’m a high school graduate yet. I feel like I should still be going back to the familiar faces of friends and teachers, the pushy back hallways and endless homework and tests. Instead, I am moving onto a totally new environment with no one I know. Struck with nerves and excitement, I will first concentrate on my awesome summer.

With that in mind, my summer began right after my dance recital. On Saturday morning, along with my Mom and my sister, we started our 2009 road trip to Vegas, California and Ukiah. We began with a destination to Vegas, stopping in a small town called Lima along the way. In Vegas, I did 6 hours of shopping at the Premium Outlet.
Monday night, we arrived in LA around 11:30 pm. The next day, my Mom’s friend took us to the Desert Hills Premium Outlet and we went back again on Wednesday to finish up the shopping. Wednesday night, we got to meet up with two LA friends that I have known since I was three years old. I got a chance to chill with them again the following night. It was great to see them again!

On Friday, we made our way to Ukiah, stopping in San Francisco on the way. Ukiah is a small town near Santa Rosa. The reason for this road trip was to go to Ukiah for the City of Ten Thousand Buddha’s 30th Anniversary. My sister and brother had gone to school there in 1995 and 1996 and I have been visiting there since I was three. It felt great to be back there; it was different too because there was so many people. My sister and I ended up being volunteers on Saturday because they needed help. On Sunday, we stayed to watch the Dragon dance and had lunch with a few old friends and my cousin and his wife.

We started driving after lunch and slept in Spokane. We arrived back in Calgary this morning at 3:00 a.m.; we drove for 16 hours on Monday! It was very long and tiring but it was a great trip!

Now that I am back, I have so much to do in so little time! Ten days till I leave for Toronto; I am so excited and nervous at the same time! I still need to get my gown altered, buy my outfits and cocktail dress, find sponsors and prepare! In terms of preparations, I feel that my weakness has become my strength and I am really proud of that! I feel confident and ready to enjoy my experience!

Make a Difference Casting Call (MTC-W Blog Assignment #1)

ARE YOU READY TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE?

This is an audition notice for those interested in being on an upcoming TV show, Make a Difference. This show will be filmed in Toronto, Ontario. We are looking for two teams of four that consists of enthusiastic, charismatic, committed and driven individuals to be on the first five episodes (the first week of the show).

*All members must be 18 years old or older.

Making a Difference involves teamwork, strategic thinking, being active and lots of fun. Most importantly, this show is about making a difference. All the challenges are to make a difference in someone’s life or affect someone in a positive way.

Each week, the obstacles and challenges the teams have to conquer challenges. Some weeks there might be a new challenge everyday and some weeks there might be a challenge that lasts the team for the whole week.

Teams will always receive prizes regardless of how they do. These prizes are the gift bags containing products from the TV show’s sponsors. Wendy Huang, the show’s host, will be asking trivial questions throughout the episodes. These questions, if answered correctly, will allow more prizes added to their gift bags that the teams will be receiving. This makes the teams do research surrounding their task. With certain time limits during their challenges, this requires the teams to manage their time well and use their teamwork and leadership skills.

The first week of episodes have three challenges that the teams have to face. Both teams start off with 50 points. When one team wins the challenge, they receive 5 points from the other team while the team that lost the challenge loses the 5 points. Then the winning team of a challenge receives a trivial question from me regarding their task. If they answer it correctly, they receive more gifts in the gift bags they will receive in the end. At the end, the team with the most points will receive a trip to a one week vacation in Nassau, Bahamas sponsored by Goody, Toronto Academy of Acting and P&G beinggirl.ca.

Challenge #1: This challenge will take two days. Both teams are given the same supply of Goody products and a budget of $100 to buy anything they want from a local dollar store. Each team is given a day to come up with a game for elementary students with these products.

The criteria:

- the products can’t be destroyed

- the students must be able to keep a Goody product in the end

Then both teams teach their games to a group of students and the students are allowed to play. The team that receives the most votes from the students after both of their games has been tested out, wins the challenge.

During this challenge, Wendy will be visiting the students beforehand and telling them about what they will be expecting. Then she will go around to these elementary kids asking them a few little questions about them – name, grade and their feelings – if they’re excited, what they are looking forward to, etc. Ms. Huang will also be traveling between the two teams to see how their progress of creating their game is going. At the end of the challenge, Wendy will ask a trivial question to the winning team. (ex. When was Goody created?)

Then the students are given the Goody products to keep.

Challenge #2: This challenge will take four days. The teams have a chance to visit and learn from the Toronto Academy of Acting, become familiar with P&G beinggirl.ca and create a television commercial. The first day will document the team’s learning process and the acting and on set workshops they receive from the Toronto Academy of Acting. The second day, the teams have to do research on P&G beinggirl.ca. Both teams will be given a box of the same questions that teenagers from a junior high school have put in. The professionalism and correctness they answer in will determine if more prizes will be added into their gift bags. For the last two days, each team must come up with a commercial for P&G beinggirl.ca.

The criteria:

- include P&G beingirl.ca’s logo and cause

- include a footage of P&G beinggirl.ca’s website

- include a footage of somewhere on the Toronto School of Acting campus

- under three minutes

Each team’s commercial will then be judged by three esteemed professors at the Toronto Academy of Acting to determine the winner.

During this challenge, Wendy will be interviewing the Dean at the Toronto Academy of Acting and Iris, the advice giver on P&G beinggirl.ca regarding their objectives and programs. This will allow the audience to know more about our sponsors. Wendy will also be interviewing the teams to see how they are holding out, what ideas they have in mind during their challenge. Then the winning team will receive a question to have a chance in adding more prizes into their gift bags. (ex. Which instructor at the Toronto Academy of Acting starred in the It’s Alan? What is the United Nations campaign P&G beinggirl.ca is involved with?)

Weekend in Vegas!

I spent my last weekend in Las Vegas. It wasn't a vacation trip though, I was there for business.

After the last day of classes of High School on Friday, I got on the plane with my Mom and headed for Vegas. It wasn't a direct flight so we had to transfer at Salt Lake City. Unfortunately, our plane from SLC to Las Vegas was cancelled and we had to stay for the night.

The next morning (Saturday) we arrived at the Riveria Hotel & Casino where we immediately headed to the 'business' we were there for. It was the 2009 Market America Chinese Leadership Convention. Market America is the business my mom does and will soon be my business when I turn 18.

There seemed to be around 3000 people there and my nerves started to bulid up. My business at this convention was tto do my Chinese ribbon dance at the Saturday evening performance night and to do a Motives by Loren Ridinger testamonial on stage infront of everyone on Sunday morning.

What scared me most was not getting my voice back in time. Last weekend, I had came down with a cold. Lack of sleep and busy with end of the school year activities caused me to lose my voice. On Saturday, I still did not get my voice back and I was afraid I would not be able to go on stage.

On Saturday night at the evening performance, I did my Chinese ribbon dance and I am glad it went well. What made that night special was the fact that I was the only performer that was not a Market America distributor or over the age of 18. My Miss Teen Alberta title was announced as well which I hope helped me create many fans and supporters.

Sunday morning, I woke up to find that I could talk and I was really happy everything worked out. As I was waiting backstage for my turn to go on (again, I was the only non-Market America distributor and under the age of 18), I kept practicing my speech.

Although I had given a speech at my Graduation infront of at least 3000 people, I was still nervous because this speech that I was going to do was in Mandarin. I am fluent in Mandarin but giving a speech in that language scared me.

Fortunately, it went really well! I was shaking a lot on stage but I managed to finish it and everyone was impressed. After the speech, I was greeted by many people asking me to take pictures with them and I handed out my promotional cards which included the website to donate to Free the Children charity. I also got interviewed by a Market America Chinese Website reporter who said he will put me on the home page.

That evening, I left Vegas to come back to Calgary because I had a English 30-1 Part A diploma exam on Monday morning.

This trip to Vegas, although rushed, but amazing. I had a lot of fun and gained so much experience - performing, public speaking and interview skills.
