Hi everyone!
My name is Wendy Huang, I'm 17 years old and I am Miss Teen Alberta - World 2009!
The Miss Teen Alberta - World Pageant was held on Feb. 22 at the TELUS Convention Center. Out of over 400 online Alberta applicants, 35 were chosen to compete in this pageant. The judges then chose the top 13 girls to move onto the Miss Teen Canada - World Pageant in Toronto from July 19 - July 26!
First of all, I want to thank my family, my sponsors and my friends for supporting me through this pageant. Special thanks to those who came and watched the show that night! It was because of you guys that allowed me to naturally smile on stage and stay confident, motivated and driven.
To all 35 contestants, every one of you did an amazing job that night! Everyone brought out their own beauty and uniqueness to the stage. I believe it isn't the title that is most important, it is the process we went through, the friendship that we created, the support we gave each other that counts. Stay positive strive for your goal and best of luck to everyone of you in the future!
I am really honoured to be crowned as Miss Teen Alberta - World and as one of the representatives of Alberta in the Miss Teen Canada - World Pageant. I will work harder, prepare harder to bring out my full potential at the National pageant!
A little bit about myself and my platform:
Having immigrated to Canada in 1997, I am fluent in both English and Mandarin but my family has been separated in different countries ever since. Therefore, my one wish has always been that my family will be together in one place for a long period of time.
I have a strong passion for dance; I have been dancing since I was three years old. Having done ballet, jazz, acrobatics, Chinese, tap, hip-hop, lyrical and ballroom makes me a well-rounded dancer. Dance is not my only talent; my other talent is speech. I have won many medals and trophies for speech competitions.
I am involved in many extracurricular activities at my school such as, the Student Council, Leadership, Grad Committee, Yearbook, Theatre and many more because I want to leave high school with many memories and be able to have an impact on others in a positive way. I have also received academic honors, honors of distinction and a Student of the Year Nominee Award.
I believe that my experiences from dancing, speech competitions and my strong involvement in school have made me a very confident, committed and driven individual with excellent leadership, communication and decision-making skills.
I am very grateful that I grew up in such a diverse educational system. Since I had the opportunity to receive such a great education, I want to promote education in developing countries. I believe that education is crucial to our lives and everyone deserves a chance to be educated. Currently, there are nearly 113 million children in our world who cannot attend primary school and 264 million who do not attend secondary school. Furthermore, there are over a billion adults who are illiterate. It is imperative that us, the citizens of developed countries, help out those in need, provide them with the money, teachers and textbooks. With the power of education, I believe it can help end poverty.
