There are many moments in our lives that define who we are. 2009 contained many of those moments and it has defined me into someone better, someone who I like and is not afraid to show. This year has definitely been an eventful one, filled with many accomplishments that I’m proud of. So many people brought smiles to my face and each one of them has impacted me greatly.
Exactly one year ago, I was under much stress, trying to finish my FIT application essay and studying for the diplomas coming up. Time flies, and as long as we try out best and make the best out of everything, what’s meant to be is meant to be. Although in the end, I did not get accepted into FIT, through my disappointment, I was able to embark on a different journey that turned my emotions into happiness and appreciation.
The usual winter break in Asia ended and I was welcomed back into reality with diplomas. Last semester of high school flew in and I flew to Miami for the Market America World Conference and a Caribbean cruise on the Norwegian Pearl. With a tan and prepared mentality, I entered the Miss Teen Alberta – World 2009 pageant. On February 22, my name was announced and my life changed. I became Miss Teen Alberta – World 2009. Even to this day, I still feel the excitement when I watch the video. Through this pageant, I matured, and created many valuable memories and friendships. With my title, I was able to positively influence others, become a role model, and…make a difference. As cheesy as it sounds, I know I have made a difference and it’s proven through the money I helped raise for Free the Children charity. With $10,000, children in poverty are able to receive an education they deserve.
More accomplishments were completed through Track & Field, graduation, and my extracurricular activities. The end of Grade 12 put a dot on the first chapter of my life and the next chapter started right away.
It started with something great – the Miss Teen Canada – World 2009 pageant. Representing Alberta, I placed in the Top 10 out of 54 girls and won both the Free the Children Award and the People’s Choice Award. The week’s experience was another great one that allowed me to acquire skills useful to me in the near future and a network across Canada. The friends I made and memories I created was definitely worth it.
Late August, I became legal with the celebration of my 18th birthday. Although nothing grand like a traditional Filipino debut, I was happy that many of my relatives were there. 18 came with a flush of responsibilities, expectations and exciting adventures. It started with owning my own business. I know I must concentrate on my schoolwork first, but having this on the side only provides advantages regardless if I do it or not.
University – although not FIT, UTSC has made me love it. Everyone I met was a new friend and I am so happy to have met these people! I really enjoy the pace of this school life. With such a small campus, it’s great to see your close friends everyday and have fun in between classes. But when it comes to midterms and final exams, you really need to set your foot down in one of those study rooms or at home and study. UTSC has allowed me to continue exploring my passion with dance, learning different styles of hip hop and just being with a group of people who share the same burning passion.
First semester went by like crazy! It was great to relax of the winter break – first winter break without having to worry about schoolwork. I was so happy to see all of my old friends through my travels to Calgary, Shanghai, and Taiwan. Christmas was spent in Shanghai with my dad and New Year’s Eve was spent with my relatives near Taipei 101.
New Year's Eve:
As the lights dimmed on Taipei 101, we started the countdown to the end of 2009 and the start of 2010. I started thinking about the eventful journey I stepped into exactly the same time last year. Did I try my best and never gave up throughout the year? Do I regret anything? Is there anything I want to do differently this year? 3…2…1…The city of Taipei was welcomed into 2010 with a great burst of fireworks display around the building. When the fireworks ended, I thought of my New Year’s resolution.
Here it is:
1. Make my year as Miss Teen Scarborough – World 2010 eventful and worth it
2. Appreciate all the little things people do for me
3. Make those some differences which can lead up to the big ones
4. Don’t lose sight of my priorities and work hard to achieving my goals
5. Stay on top of my schoolwork, my blog posting and making presents.
a) Go to the gym every week
b) Sleep early – be healthy =)
I am ready for this new beginning.

Frosh (Orientation) was pretty awesome - tons of cheering, making friends and creating memories. It was one of the best times since I've moved here. From that, I've met some great friends who have made my time here very enjoyable so far. Third years, second years, Froshies... all Asian of course. Management Program is pretty much dominated by Asians. I am really happy to have met all these people. They help me out a lot and so much fun to be with!
I turned 18 on August 25th and it was such a great birthday!
